In 1999, Steamfast debuted a new product called the “garment steamer.” This item allowed to press and freshen their clothes much like a professional dry cleaner for the first time and was an instant success. In the following decade, Steamfast expanded its line of steam products, and now they bring to the market the Steamfast SF-435 Compact Fabric Steamer.
At 1.5 pounds and 7 x 9 x 4 inches, this steamer is extremely compact even in comparison to other compact steamers currently on the market. The SF-435 features an easy-to-fill 7-ounce water tank and heats up relatively quickly, allowing the user to begin steaming within about 2 minutes of turning the device on.
The tank allows for up to 12 minutes of continuous steam and the 9-foot power cord meets average industry standards. The unit also features an automatic shut off when the water tank runs empty to prevent the heating element from burning out.
The product also comes with an attachable fabric brush as well as a lint remover. The manufacturer recommends the product for use on shirts, pants, dresses, curtains, upholstery, and table linens but notes that the product can be used on many other items around the house and on the go.
The diminutive size and weight of the SF-435 make it ideal for travel, and the product comes with a 1-year warranty and customer support.
However, not all customers are completely satisfied with the SF-435. One common complaint is that the device does not have an on/off switch – once it is plugged in, it will begin heating and remain steaming until it is unplugged. This is inconvenient for the user and can cause the steamer to run dry very quickly if not careful; it also makes it difficult for the user to put the steamer down while in use. An off or pause button would be a welcome addition.
Another common complaint is that the SF-435 regularly spits and drips water as it steams, causing garments to sometimes become soaked. This is potentially ruinous to certain fabrics and cause for concern when purchasing a steamer.
Some customers have found easy solutions to this problem, however, noting that by simply placing a piece of cheesecloth over the steamer the problem is remedied – the cheesecloth allows the steam to come through and also catches the excess water, preventing the garment being steamed from becoming noticeably wet.
Conclusion
This product is one of the most inexpensive on the market, and as expected it is not as flawless or powerful as many of its other, higher-quality counterparts. If you are looking for a cheap and extremely small steamer to take with you while you travel, this may well be a decent choice.
